The Pirate Baseball team took its game on the road last week and suffered two losses, falling 9-0 to the undefeated Charles Wright Tarriers, and then 12-2 to Port Townsend.

On Wednesday, April 4, Vashon traveled to Charles Wright to play their third league game of the season against the undefeated Tarriers.

Josh Myer started on the hill for the Pirates, pitching three innings and allowing two runs on four hits with no walks. He was relieved by Joe Wald in the fourth.

Wald struggled with his control, and Charles Wright took full advantage, putting up back-to-back three-run innings. Erik Powelson came on in the sixth inning and recorded the final two outs.

Leading the Pirate hitting attack were Myer, who was two for two, and Ben Reoux, who was two for three. Adding to the hit total were Ezra Lacina and Michael Bernheisel, who each had a single. Despite the six hits, Vashon was unable to push any runs across against the strong Tarrier pitching.

The final line score: Charles Wright 9 runs, 8 hit, 2 errors, Vashon 0 runs, 6 hits, 3 errors.

The Pirates played a non-league road game on Friday against Port Townsend. Kelly Sullivan was the starting Pirate pitcher and threw three innings. He was followed by Reoux and  Bernheisel. The trio gave up 12 runs on 12 hits over five innings. The game ended in the bottom of the fifth due to the 10-run rule.

The Pirate offense was led by Bernheisel, who was two for two on the day. Geoffrey Kraabel chipped in with a double, and Thomas Douglas added a single.

The line score: Port Townsend 12 runs, 12 hits, 1 error, Vashon 2 runs, 4 hits, 3 errors.

Coach Steve Hall said the final score was due in part to the fact that he was aiming to give all players on the team good playing time that day.

“Without a JV team this year, non-league games are our only chance to give guys playing time that don’t see much during league games,” he said.

Hall mentioned that Ryan Bernheisel did a good job behind the plate, Kelly Sullivan looked good pitching and Thomas Douglas hit the ball hard twice with a hit and another one taken away by a nice defensive play.

“We saw some real good things out there,” he said.

The loss dropped the Pirates’ record to 0-5 for the season.

The team will take this week off for Spring Break and hit the field again on Tuesday, April 17, at home against Cascade Christian.
