The Pirate girls earned themselves a spot in the 2009 soccer playoffs with a 9-1 win over the visiting Chimacum Cowboys last Tuesday. Going into the game, Chimacum had a mathematical chance to overtake Vashon for the fourth and last playoff spot.
Sophomore Catherine “Cat” Amick redefined the term “hat trick,” meaning three goals in a game, to “Cat trick” when she scored three times in the first six minutes. After Teal Sigler had softened up the Cowboy defense with a few quick shots, she sent the ball to Amick for goals in the third and fourth minutes.
Then in the sixth minute Carlyle Scott sent one of her patented crosses from the left side across the goal mouth for Amick to head in.
Sigler got on the board unassisted in the 21st minute and in the 26th minute on another Scott cross.
Olivia Andrus had an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute and scored in the 39th with an assist from Bailey Protzeller, after Sarah Browning put the Cowboys on the board in the 35th minute.
After Amick got her fourth goal with an assist from Sigler in the 52nd minute and Sigler completed her own hat trick in the 56th with Scott getting the assist, Coach Paul Beytebiere played mostly reserves for the rest of the game.
The Pirates continued their winning ways with a 5-2 win over the visiting Cascade Christian Cougars on Thursday. This time it took Amick 25 minutes to complete her “Cat trick.” Goals in the sixth, ninth and 25th minutes, all assisted by Sigler, put the Pirates up 3-0.
Sigler made it 4-0 with an unassisted goal in the 27th minute. The Cougars got on the board in the 35th minute with an unassisted goal by Jensen Berry.
Amick, with Scott getting the assist, scored just seconds into the second half.
In the 56th minute Melissa Short got the Cougars’ second goal with Blaykne Pederson on the assist.
Once again, all the Pirate reserves got significant playing time.
Vashon hosted Charles Wright yesterday in the final regular-season game. The fourth-place Pirates open playoffs at Port Townsend tomorrow in a 1 p.m. loser-out game.
Vashon’s JV continued their un-beaten record with two wins for the week. The Chimacum game was really a friendly scrimmage. The Cowboys had only eight players available for the JV game, two of those for only a half as they were needed for the varsity game.
The Pirates loaned Katelyn Carter to play goalkeeper for the Cowboys in the first half, and the teams played nine-a-side. The second half was played five-a-side.
Sammy Clements, Marielee Storms and Taylor Hernandez scored goals for Vashon.
On Thursday the Pirate JV shut out the Cougar JV 7-0. Clements, Storms, Hernandez, Anna Osborne and Carter all scored for the Pirates. Taylor Knowles, Hernandez and Paige Allison had assists.
Larissa Kuhns and Knowles shared goal keeping duty. Vashon’s solid defense deserves much of the credit for the shutout. Ella McKallor, Kiely Bernheisel, Emmie Kehoe and Allison held the back line for the first half. Kuhns stepped in for the second half, allowing Allison to move up to an attacking position.
The JV was to travel to Mount Rainier High Monday and end the season hosting Charles Wright yesterday.
