Valkyries start season strong

Five games into the season, the Vashon Valkyries are undefeated.

Five games into the season, the Vashon Valkyries are undefeated.

In their first three games of the season, they dispatched Lake Sammamish, 7-3, Olympia, 10-2, and South Kitsap, 8-0. Last week, they added two games more to the list, defeating Graham-Kapowsin, 15-2, and North Olympic of Port Angeles, 10-6.

In both cases, the girls played well, coach Larry Dubois said, and showed strong lacrosse skills.

“They are a successful group because they are hard working, take it seriously and have a lot of heart,” he added.

He noted that against North Olympic, the girls came from behind in the first half of the game and tied it, 3-3, by the half.

“They stayed calm and focused, and team play gave us the victory,” he said.

Vashon’s team is a relatively inexperienced group this year, as several of the most experienced players graduated last year.

“The girls who have joined are doing a great job of learning the game,” he said.

The team’s defense has always been strong, he added, and this year it is led by goalie Sophie Gagnaire, who is the top goalie in save percentages in the league.

The team’s offense is also gaining strength.

“Our attack in developing with the help of Emily Wilson and Eva Anderson,” he said.

The team is now in the midst of a three-week break in its game schedule  to accommodate the various spring break schedules at different schools. The next home game will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at the Vashon High School stadium.
