Vashon High School opened league play on the road Thursday, Sept. 28, against the Klahowya Eagles.

The Pirates (0-3) entered the contest looking for their first win of the season, coming off three tough losses on the season. Klahoywa (3-1) had claimed three non-league wins and dropped their league opener 45-13 to Life Christian Academy.

Klahowya received the opening kickoff and went on a 6-play 61-yard scoring drive to take an early 7-0 lead.

The Pirates first possession started at the 50-yard line after Klahowya attempted an onside kick. Chase Bradrick connected with Ricky Rasmussen on a 24-yard pass completion to the Eagles 26-yard line. The seven-play, 49-yard drive stalled out when Vashon was unable to convert on 4th and goal from the Eagles 1-yard line.

Klahowya took over on downs and scored on the next play, from scrimmage, on a 99-yard touchdown reception, and led 13-0 after the first quarter. The second quarter saw Klahowya move the ball downfield after starting a drive at their own 20-yard line.

Vashon’s defense came up strong when Sawyer Ranney made an impressive tackle on a fourth-and-goal for Klahowya, which, turned over the ball on downs at the Pirate 1-yardline. The VHS offensive moved the ball downfield near the end of the quarter but was unable to convert it into any points, with a turnover to close out the half — trailing 13-0.

Klahowya scored at the 6:01 mark of the third quarter on a 33-yard touchdown completion, increasing the lead to 20-0. Next, they scored midway through the 4th quarter on a 14-yard rushing touchdown, taking a 27-0 lead.

Vashon closed out the scoring on a 10-play 63-yard scoring drive, with a one-yard rushing downtown by Teigin Monson.

The drive included a fourth-and-one conversion by Monson for 9 yards to the Klahowya 33-yard line. Chase Bradrick added a 21-yard run to set up the Pirate scoring drive.

Vashon rushed for 185 yards on 39 carries, and passed for 70 yards, for a total of 255 yards of offense on the evening. It was far and away the most productive outing of the 23-24 season.

Vashon (0-4) hosts East Jefferson Rivals (0-5) in league play at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 7, at VHS.
