Vashon Film Society presents award-winning film

Vashon Film Society will present two screenings plus a Q &A with the writer-directors and actors of the feature film “Brides to Be,” at 8:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Vashon Theater.

The film’s writer-directors, Kris and Lindy Boustedt, will introduce the supernatural drama and answer questions after the film, along with acting leads Carollani Sandberg and Angela DiMarco.

The film made its world premiere at the Seattle Pride Film Festival in June, and the Boustedt filmmaking duo just returned from Europe, where “Brides” played at the Homochrom LGBT Film Festival in Germany and at the Paris International Lesbian &Feminist Film Festival in France.

The filmmakers’ earlier successful short films, “Practical Things” and “Together Forever,” were shown widely in film festivals and racked up over a million YouTube views. “Brides to Be” revisits the characters Robin and Jenna, who were introduced in “Together Forever.” Now, the women are getting married and have just arrived at their secluded fairy tale venue to celebrate their wedding. Robin is excited to see her dreams come true. Insecure Jenna tries to shake off some strange occurrences at the old mansion as her own pre-wedding anxieties, but soon the lovers realize everything is not as it seems.

“The film explores the creeping dread of our own insecurities, doubts and anxieties writ large though paranormal and terrifying activity,” Lindy Boustedt said.

Kris Boustedt added that the film is an allegory “for the way hatred and fear infect our lives with homophobia and continued resistance to marriage equality.”

“We wanted to buck the trend of the horror film genre by having the main characters be women with their own stories, strengths and vulnerabilities, instead of being just props or screams. Plus we wanted to feature non-exploited, non-margininalized, non-fetishized lesbian characters,” Lindy said.
