What’s going on: Arts events on Vashon

“Hybrid,” an award-winning documentary film about Milford Beeghly, a radical farmer in the 1930s who pioneered the process of genetically enhanced crops, will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at Café Luna. The screening is free.
Sarah Christine, an Island singer and songwriter, will perform a free show at 9 p.m. Friday, April 23, at Buddha Bar & Lounge. Christine has contributed vocals to several bands, including Publish the Quest, The Crucialites, Adrian Xavier Band and Prezident Brown. Her music is a blend of folk, pop, jazz, soul, reggae and rhythm and blues.
Sherri Jerome and Michael Beckworth, the driving forces behind the roots rock band Strange Jerome, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 23, at Café Luna in a free concert.
Ed Bang and Alejo Ferreres will bring their Americana music duo, The Mobiles, to Café Luna for a show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 24. It’s a free benefit show. All donations from a tip jar will go to Vashon Island Pet Protectors.
Mary Lou Sanelli, an author and performer, wlll present “The Immigrant’s Table — a Literary Feast” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at the Blue Heron. Tickets, $10 and $12, are on sale at Blue Heron, Heron’s Nest, Books by the Way and by calling 463-5131.
Visqueen, a well-known Seattle band, will have a show at 8 p.m. Friday, April 23, at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi. Musicians from Vashon High School will open the show, which is being organized as an opportunity for Island youth to perform and enjoy themselves. Opening bands will include Skyler Ford & Buffalo Thunder and Madeleine Wolzcko, performing with Julia Hanowell and Kiki Means. For more information, see page 13.
“Haiku Comes in from the Rain,” a Vashon Allied Arts New Works performance featuring Island poets Ann Spiers, Kajira Wyn Berry and Hita Von Mende and friends, will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 25. Norm Hollingshead, an opera aficionado and scholar, will present a free lecture on Aaron Copland’s opera, “The Tender Land,” at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 25, at Vashon Library. Hollingshead’s lecture comes in anticipation of Vashon Opera’s upcoming performances of “The Tender Land,” at 8 p.m. Friday, May 14, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at Bethel Church. Laura Love, a singer, songwriter and bassist, will mark the release of her latest album, “The Sweeter the Juice,” with a concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at the Blue Heron.
