Roncone was born and raised in upstate New York. In 2002, she moved to the Pacific Northwest, where she began to take her poetry more seriously. She hosted a poetry open mic in Seattle for more than 10 years before moving to Vashon to enjoy the quiet and wild. She recently published the poetry anthology “Three Birds Dreaming” with two other poets, one from the island, to celebrate writing a poem a day for more than six years. She continues this practice to better understand the brilliant magic of words. Courtesy Photo

The Poetry Well is a monthly column that showcases island poetry. This month includes a poem by Margaret Roncone.

Imagine

We plant our fathomless lives

on the dark side of the moon

I invent new words (vowel-less) with the tap of a pen

if I squeeze my eyes together

I’m in tall grass bowing to the sea

I’m uninformed about rowboats

trust no one with one oar

no matter the vessel

preferring sails to motors

I take deep breaths

practice non-religion

after 2 a.m. strangers appear with snowman faces

throw a stone at them

they’ll disappear.
