Pottery Talk offered by Heritage Museum

The Vashon Heritage Museum will host “Vashon Potters in the 1970s and 1980s,” via Zoom, at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14. Local potters Greg McElroy, Marla Smith, Chris Beck and Irene Otis will discuss, with moderator Elizabeth Shepherd, editor of The Beachcomber, the early days of pottery on the island, and how that scene contributed to the growth and flourishing of many aspects of Vashon’s arts landscape.

Collector talks about propaganda art

A “Talk on the Rock” with Matt Bergman, “Manufacturing Consent: Female Imagery in 20th Century Political Propaganda” will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at Vashon Center for the Arts. Bergman will discuss his collection of vintage wartime propaganda arts and posters, currently on display at VCA.

See your name on Vashon Theatre’s Walk of Fame

Step up to support Vashon Theatre’s plans to expand its operations and build a new outdoor plaza, complete with an outdoor screen, bistro tables, booths for merchants and an ADA-accessible restroom, by having your name engraved on the theater’s new “Walk of Fame.”

By April 13, the theater will have 34 days remaining to buy a tile. Currently, its owners have sold nearly 400 tiles, with 600 remaining. Eterno El Flamenco Vive

Stop by VCA for a night of Flamenco, featuring Flamenco dancer Savannah Fuentes and “Flamenco Royalty” Diego Amador Jr. on guitar, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer called Fuentes’ work “…real Flamenco, straight and stunning.” She has produced more than 300 performances and workshops, featuring internationally recognized Spanish Flamenco artists, including Diego Amador Jr., Saray Munoz and Jesus Montoya.

Makana to perform at VCA

Makana, the last protégé of Hawaiian slack key guitar master Sonny Chillingworth, will make his Kay White Hall debut at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20.

Makana’s music has been featured on three Grammy-nominated albums, and Guitar Player magazine named him as one of the top three guitarists in the U.S. in 2008. Currently, Makana is involved in workshops for an original musical that is intended for Broadway.

“Ethics, Power, and Love for a Changing World” with Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma

In honor of National Poetry Month, Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma will read from his new translation of “The Kural” — a classical Tamil masterpiece on ethics, power, and love at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 21 at Vashon Center for the Arts.

Pruiksma will speak with actor and performer Tami Brockway Joyce about his 24-year journey to bring “The Kural” to life. Copies of “The Kural” may be purchased from the Vashon Bookshop beforehand or at the reading.

The event will be live-streamed on the VCA website as well.

Graham Nash adds a show at arts center

Legendary artist Graham Nash — founding member of both the Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash — will play two shows on Oct. 1 and 2 at Vashon Center for the Arts. The Oct. 2 show is sold out, but tickets for the Oct. 1 show can be purchased starting at 12 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at vashoncenterforthearts.org.
