Mik Kuhlman brings theatre to the woods of Vashon

“The Standing Nation” is a new interdisciplinary work by Vashon’s Mik Kuhlman and a team of collaborators, bringing audiences into the hidden, mysterious world of trees.

Kuhlman will conduct eight performances on two weekends, Saturday through Sunday, May 14-15 and May 21-22.

The audience size must be limited to 15 patrons, and children are welcome. The ‘theatres’ for “The Standing Nation” are intimate forest settings on Vashon-Maury Island revealed only to ticket holders.

Kuhlman beckons her audience to experience connections with trees where they live – in the forests. “The Standing Nation” offers an experience to amplify each participant’s devotion to nature and their ties to it.

Tickets for “The Standing Nation go on sale Friday, April 22, at brownpapertickets.com.

Admission is $25 per person and the ‘secret’ performance locations with access, parking and logistics details are revealed upon purchase.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author to speak at Open Space

Kathryn Schulz, a staff writer for The New Yorker, will read from her new book, “Lost & Found,” at Open Space for Arts & Community at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 3.

The book, a wide-ranging and at times deeply personal exploration of both gratitude and grief, is a memoir: Schultz writes about the death of her father and her profound grief over his passing, as well as her discovery of love – a fairytale-like romance with the woman she ultimately marries. She says she hopes her talk will be more of a conversation – with people sharing their own stories of loss and discovery.

Schulz won the Pulitzer Prize in 2016 for “The Really Big One,” her New Yorker piece about a mega-quake that will someday hit our region. Tickets are $10 and are available at openspacevashon.com.
