“The changes in Dockton since I moved here have been remarkable,” said Rose Belknap, one of the organizers of this year’s Dockton Art Walk. “Fifty years ago, it was all fishermen and their families. Now it’s turned into an artist enclave.”
The work of many of the artists residing in in the neighborshop will be on display when the second annual Dockton Art Walk returns on the last week of August.
“We were stunned last year by the turnout,” Belknap said. “It was more popular than we had ever imagined.”
The art tour features 11 studios, with all but one located within such a small area that almost the entire tour is easily walkable. The sole exception, Gretchen Hancock Studio, is a short drive away.
The 20 artists who will be exhibiting this year work in a wide variety of media that includes painting (oil, acrylic and watercolor), pottery, jewelry, neon, sculpture, block prints, and felted apparel from shoes to hats and everything in between.
Gayle Lurie of Dockton Pottery, another organizer, suggested more charms to be found in the neighborhood.“While you’re here, walk the historic Dockton Trail,” she said. “Visit the playground and the beach by the marina. Or take a walk in lovely Dockton forest. Make a day of it!”
Food will be available throughout each day of the art walk. On Saturday, Lunetta Pizzeria will be at Radiant Neon (#3 on the studio list), while on Sunday, the same location will feature food from Aeggy’s Farm. At Cory Winn’s studio (#5 on the list), Buvette (a French café pop-up) will serve coffee and pastries in the mornings, and sandwiches in the afternoons of both days.
Music will also be provided at the Old Dockton Store from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m: RiverBend and Croaker on Saturday, and Us and Lift From The Porch on Sunday.
As an added bonus, visitors can obtain an “art passport” and get it stamped at every studio. Anyone who visits all 11 studios will be entered into a drawing for an “art goody bag” that will include an original painting and various other contributed items.
The Dockton Art Walk will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, August 30 and 31.
Details, including a map of the studios and links to each artist, can be found at docktonartists.com. Free parking is widely available along 99th Ave SW.
