Start next week with a very cool summertime musical treat by heading to Vashon Sugar Shack’s backyard to hear Jon Langford and Sally Timms in a concert at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4.
At the show, there will be two kinds of folks in the audience: the lucky ones already aware of the whip-smart wit, sly humor and soulful charisma of the duo, and newbies who get to experience it for the first time.
Langford and Timms — whose performances are the place where punk rock, old English sea shanties, heartbreaking ballads and alt-country hootenanny collide — have been working together on and off for decades.
Langford, a Welsh musician and visual artist based in Chicago, is one of the founders of the legendary punk band The Mekons and is also known for his high octane alt-county ensembles, The Waco Brothers and Pine Valley Cosmonauts. His muscular playing and singing voice have somehow miraculously survived long miles of wear and tear on the road — a trick of time that proves the ageless power of rock and roll.
Timms, born in Leeds, England and now also a longtime Chicago resident, joined The Mekons in 1986. She, too, has had a long, genre-defying career that has included everything from solo country records to hipster kids’ albums to artsy pirate pantomines.
Throughout it all, the pair has reconnected for albums, tours and shows like the one they will offer up at Sugar Shack, filled with surprises that might, in turn, be haunting or hilarious.
Tickets, $10, are on sale at the gate, located in the alley behind Sugar Shack, at 17636 100th Ave SW. Food and drink will also be available at the show.
