First Friday gallery cruise offers an array of art in many media

Most galleries and art spots are open from 6 to 9 p.m.

Café Luna will exhibit the work of fine art photographer Kent Phelan. Educated at the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, Phelan learned that as an art form, photography could also be a historical record. Phelan recently moved to Vashon and now aspires to photograph island life.

Rachel LordKenaga will be the featured artist at Hinge Gallery. Her oil paintings on wood are abstract images and reflect the emotional landscapes of the artist’s imagination.

Treasure Island welcomes Las Hormigas (the aunties), with a celebratory opening party with complimentary beverages and appetizers. Collectors and former antique dealers Valaria Lawing, Molly Malone and Christina Scott — Las Hormigas — have rented a room at Treasure Island to sell the bounty of their worldwide travel collections.

PSCCU will show Jacquelyn Lown’s soulful watercolors and oil paintings of the Pacific Northwest, with music by CatBird, Mary Shackelford and Jim Burke, playing a mix of old time, jazz and ballads on guitar, mandolin and banjo.

Sarah’s Salon will show art by Lori Wells. Wells creates “vibrant, large-scale pastel paintings of modern goddesses, as well as fun and expressive dog portraits.”

Raven’s Nest Gallery will feature Native beaded leather and seal-fur medicine pouches along with medicinals — salves and ointments made from the devil’s club plant.

Two Wall Gallery will show encaustic photo panels by McMurray Middle School art students. Under the direction of Ray Pfortner, the students’ photographs, taken on Vashon and beyond, were transferred onto beeswax. The show’s title, “60 x 30,” is a reference to the 60 panels by the 30 McMurray student artists.

A two-man art show is the exhibit this month at VALISE Gallery. “Metatinations” is the work of metal artist Brett Carlson. Using recycled decorative tins, brads and wood, the artist gives new life to iconic objects. “A River of Ink: New and Unusual Work” by Jim Woodring features new pen and ink drawings by the award-winning artist whose recent solo show was held at Seattle’s Frye Art Museum.

With VCA’s annual Garden Tour set for June 24 and 25 in mind, the Koch Gallery will show garden-inspired works by Jean Emmons, Claire Jones and Tara McDermott. Emmons, an award-winning botanical artist, portrays plants from her Vashon garden. Jones has developed a process to create abstract three-dimensional sculptures in fiber and stitch. Photographer McDermott combines her ethereal botanical photos with encaustic.

Vashon Community Care will show the drawings of Pat Keating and resident Tom Scheidler. Scheidler is an accomplished artist, teacher and philosopher who is in the advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease. Keating, who was born with severe autism, is a longtime island resident. In the past several years, she began to create artwork as a visual journal of discovery and expression.

Vashon Intuitive Arts will show acrylic on canvas paintings by Julia Wykes, with music by Song and Legend.

Paintings donated to Granny’s Attic will be on display and for sale at the Vashon Senior Center The center will not hold an opening reception this month.

Windermere Real Estate will participate in First Friday with an exhibit of Sue Carette’s metal artwork along with Lisa B’s Sweets &Treats and live jazz music.
