Paintings and fiber mix it up

Erin Schulz and Kira Bacon will have work on display at the Blue Heron.

Schulz, an oil painter, is known for her portrait and still life work rendered in the precise style of classical realism.

Fiber artist Kira Bacon will show 20 new, hand-hooked wall hangings based on the central theme of circles.

She uses hand-dyed Dova silks, in addition to yarn, metallics, embroidery floss and more. Final pieces are embelleshed with beads, buttons and other found items.

Jack Barbash, Steve Meyer and Geoff Johns will play music at the reception.

Café Luna has a two-woman show

Kathy Larsdotter and Gayle Kellner will show oil paintings at Café Luna in May.

Larsdotter’s work in the show was inspired by a recent wilderness backpacking trip she took to the Wind River Range in Wyoming.

Kellner described her paintings as abstracted landscapes done in oil and with multiple layers of paint, so they have a sculptural quality as well.

“I love the play of light across the landscape, and my paintings are inspired by that,” she explained.

A flag show unfurls

Earlier this year, Two Wall Gallery invited Islanders to submit designs for a Vashon flag.

A good number of flag designs were received, representing a wide range of ideas, and a panel of judges recently met to choose an official flag. But the judges couldn’t agree on a winner.

So now, the gallery is inviting Islanders to weigh in on the choices, and all of the entries will be displayed at the First Friday reception.

“We’d like every Islander to choose his or her favorite,” said Greg Wessell, curator. “You do not have to be 18 to play.”

The flag designs will be on display throughout the month, and voting will continue throughout May as well.

Nine artists hit VALISE

All nine members of VALISE will be in the cooperative gallery’s May show.

VALISE members include Elizabeth Conner, Terri Fletcher, Heather Joy, Beverly Naidus, Gay Schy, Heather Timken, Jiji Saunders, Carol Schwennesen and Brian Van Buren.

Lenard Yen’s ‘States of Water’ at Duet

Painter Lenard Yen will show a collection of his works depicting watery scenes and examining the many states of water this month at Duet. Yen has been an instructor at Columbia University and a 3D animation instructor at the Art Institute of Seattle.
