High school tour

The Vashon Island School District will host a tour of Vashon High School to give community members an in-depth look at the state of the facility at 7 p.m. today, Sept. 3. People should meet in the Vashon High School gym lobby.

Farmers market

The Vashon Farmers Market will be open in the Village Green from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.

At 10:30 a.m. Jenni Wilke of Books by the Way will read stories for children.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the market will welcome Island band River Bend.

Farmers will be selling Island-grown fruits and vegetables of late summer, including plums, tomatoes, fresh corn, the first fall pumpkins, fresh-cut flowers and herbs, cheese, meats, milk, eggs and wine. Tiny’s Organic will have fruit from Eastern Washington. The Monkey Tree Restaurant will sell fresh breads, croissants, soups and cookies. Island artisans will sell a wide variety of services and goods, including furniture, jewelry, art, tiles, soap, cards, cutting boards and knife sharpening.

Master gardeners

The master gardener clinic will be at True Value and the Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6. Islanders can stop by the clinics to get more information on applying to the master gardener program, or visit the Web site at king.wsu.edu/gardenin-gardening/becomeamg.html.

Adopt-a-cat day

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an Adopt-A-Cat Day from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Saturday at Pandora’s Box.

English Faire

The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit will hold its annual English Faire from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7. The cost is $6.

This is a community-wide event and includes fish and chips or vegetarian sausage, a croquet tournament, Renaissance jugglers, Celtic music and dancers and special games for children.

High school renovations

The school district will host a public forum about options for renovating Vashon High School at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, in the high school library.

Cruise for seniors

The Vashon senior center will host an informational gathering at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9. The subject will be the “sunbreak cruise,” scheduled to depart Feb. 1, 2009, from Ft. Lauderdale and head to San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands and Nassau, in the Bahamas.

The cruise, sponsored by the senior center, is open to all and enables passengers to contribute to the ongoing work of the center because all group amenity points and other group benefits go to the operation of the center.

Audubon program

The September Vashon Audubon program will be presented by local Vashon birder and photographer Jack Dawdy based on his trip last winter to the Southwest. Four members of the Audubon chapter birded through parts of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

This program will focus on the birds of the Rio Grande valley and the Texas coast, a mecca for species’ diversity.

The program is free, and all are welcome to attend. It will be held at the Land Trust Building located at 10014 S.W. Bank Rd. at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18.

Dog and people walk

Vashon Island Pet Protectors’ (VIPP) Dog & People Walk will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 20, at Burton Acres Park.

Everyone is welcome, and no one needs to find sponsors. Donations are welcomed, and prizes will be awarded to the top three contributors. For more information, call VIPP at 389-1085.

Library story time

The Vashon Library will host story times for young children again in September.

Toddler Story Time will meet from 10:40 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays until Oct. 14. Kids ages 18 months to 3 years with an adult caregiver are welcome for 20 minutes of stories and songs just right for toddlers.

Preschool Story Times will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, until Oct. 14. Kids ages 3 to 5 are invited for 30 minutes of stories, songs and fun.

Lapsit Story Time will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 3 to Oct. 15.

Babies from newborn to 17 months and their caregivers can stop in for a 20-minute story time.

No registration is required.
