Pirate basketball plays first state tournament game Thursday

The Vashon boys’ basketball team punched its ticket to the Washington state 1A championship tournament in Yakima this week. This has been an incredible journey, and the Pirates find themselves with a record of 22-1 overall after defeating Kalama High School in the regional round last Friday at Rogers High School in Puyallup by a score of 59-38.

Vashon’s wrestling wunderkind Chase Wickman capped a perfect season and took home his second state championship last weekend at the Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome.

The newly platinum-coiffed Pirate wrestlers finished the two-day Mat Classic state championship last Friday and Saturday in the Tacoma Dome with a highly respectable eighth-place finish.

The Pirate Boys Basketball team finished off a 19-1 regular season as the Nisqually 1A League champions and went into the District 3 tournament as the #1 seed. Teams in the tournament included Vashon, Charles Wright Academy, Cascade Christian from the Nisqually league and Chimicum, Coupeville and Klahowya from the Olympic League.

It was a red-letter day for Vashon wrestling. Even within the storied history of the team, none can remember one quite like this.
