I don’t blame anyone for not going to Vashon Park District meetings. Witnessing that toxic environment is a lousy way to end a work day.
Cutting in the ferry line seems to be more acceptable today than in years past. On festival weekend, I experienced this twice, both times by islanders that know better. Coming on to Vashon from Fauntleroy, I had a woman driver cut in front of me. I reported this to the ferry worker at the head of the dock. His response was, “Yeah, she does it all the time.”
Get to know our son, Luther Marinez. If you do, the safer he will be.
Perhaps the fourth Sunday Continuing Conversations need some explanation. These conversations grew out of the need to talk more about various subjects aired by visitor speakers some years back at the Vashon Unitarian Fellowship.
In the late morning of Sunday, July 14, an adult male red tail hawk was shot and killed in my neighborhood. No, I didn’t actually see this happen but had been watching this huge beautiful bird flying over my house minutes before and heard gun shots. Then he never was seen again. His mate has been screaming regularly since. I think I’m almost as heartbroken as she. Both had been around here for months.
A recent letter about rudeness toward summer people (“Summer residents bring money, deserve respect,” July 10) coincided nicely with an all-islander gathering, where the first comment I heard upon arrival was, “Oh! The summer people are here!” I laughed, mentioned the letter and enjoyed as we regaled each other with stories of the cashiers at Thriftway through who’s lane we, too, will not pass.
Last month you printed a letter I wrote in which I said that Obama ought to be impeached. I also said that what we need is to have a public airing of what is happening to our Constitution. Since then, we have the revelations of Edward Snowden and Russ Tice, whistleblowers who tell us that the government has recorded, for some time now, the contents of every email and phone call we’ve made
This letter is a response to alarmists and conspiracy theorists who claim NSA surveillance programs violate our privacy. Even if that were true, I’d gladly trade my media privacy to foil a Boston Marathon plot, but the NSA does not individually scrutinize communications. They aren’t monitoring our e-mailed jokes, baby pictures or Facebook postings of the last meal we ate.
The DoVE Project does not wish there to be any misinformation about services relating to domestic violence on Vashon. Below are a few key points that we feel need clarification.
Vashon enjoyed two years of incident-free fireworks usage until last year. Thankfully, there were no reported fireworks injuries on-island last year, but there were two significant fires on hillsides.
We moved to this island in the hope of providing our children better educational opportunities. We moved here with eyes wide open, knowing there is not much racial diversity, believing we would find a place for our multi-racial family to fit in. For the most part, this has been true. However, when I read about an African American postal worker reportedly being harassed by police simply because he was parked in a public parking lot and people responded saying “I just can’t believe this could happen here,” I wanted to scream “Wake up people!
I have lived on Vashon for over 15 years. While looking for property, one of the options my husband and I had was Mukai Farm. The processing plant was not on the market and was owned by a different party.
I and others with the American Hero Quilts were sad to hear that Mike Lambert left the Country Store with no fanfare. We assume no one had a retirement party for him and he left in the same way he did his job, quietly and effectively.
